Days of state betting monopoly could be numbered
The new government in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein is looking to cancel the gambling treaty between all the German states. The government in Kiel is pressing to end the existing state gambling monopoly: "If there is no agreement at the national level, the CDU and FDP parties will explore the possibility of introducing our own franchise model in Schleswig-Holstein. In Schleswig-Holstein there is a widespread assumption that other German states would follow their example and withdraw from the gambling treaty. If such a political movement took hold, this would inject new life into the discussion on liberalising the sports betting market. The state gambling treaty guaranteeing the states' monopoly on gambling is already regarded by many German courts as constitutionally questionable, and untenable under European law. This latest political development could also inject new life into the German sports betting scene. The IMA has always been the number one platform for sports betting terminal providers. And the next event will be no different, judging from the numbers of exhibitors who have already booked. The initiative from Schleswig-Holstein will also motivate other companies to exhibit at the IMA from 19 to 22 January 2010 in Düsseldorf. The following sports betting companies have already made a firm booking for the IMA 2010:
Internet now standard feature in gaming centres
The range of amusement machines found in German gaming centres over the last few years has concentrated very strongly on gambling games. Classic amusement games have been increasingly pushed out. One group of machines, though, has proved resilient alongside the gambling machines and is now a firm fixture in gaming centres: the Internet terminals.Industry watchers attribute this mainly to the changed client structure. A new, often young - and also often female - clientèle of video-based multigamers has been attracted. These new customers belong to the multimedia generation and expect to see an appropriate, modern range of facilities in the centres. In addition, the content of Internet based services is continuously being updated as a result of the dynamism of the web. The business owners therefore need to do very little in order to ensure that the content remains innovative. And so no ongoing investment is required. However, customers expect the hard and software of the Internet terminals always to be state-of-the-art and preferably "better than at home". The world of Internet terminals has had a permanent home at the IMA ever since the end of the last century. The exhibition was the launch pad for its resounding success in the industry. All the big-name providers of Internet terminals will be represented at the IMA from 19 to 22 January 2010 in Düsseldorf.
